How to Turn your Knowledge into an Online Course

When we talk about Info Products, the first thing that comes to mind is an online course, although there are many types of Info Products (eBooks, templates, audio recordings, video recordings, etc.). I have already lost count of the courses that I have created until today. I started alone, showing what worked best for my clients, and now, since I have my agency and a powerful team behind it, the ability to generate new online courses of collective knowledge has undoubtedly multiplied.

If you're:

  • Freelance who wants to create info products to generate extra income
  • A professor who want to share courses over the Internet
  • Experienced professional in a specific niche or topic that wants to share their knowledge and experiences
  • Company and you want to educate your audience through more valuable educational content

Stay reading and I'll show you my best strategies and tactics to create and sell a successful online course!

To begin, the most important thing to start an online course is to stop procrastinating and take action. Set a goal and achieve it. An online course can not only bring you income, but it will also allow you to connect with wonderful people and help you improve yourself on a professional level, and strengthen your positioning as a brand. What's more, some students will end up becoming your best customers. And, creating and selling a course is getting out of your comfort zone, doing something special to help others while learning new things every day. Believe me when I tell you that your students' doubts are so interesting that they will keep you awake some nights and will make you learn much more.

How to generate passive income by creating and selling online courses

The formula is as follows:

  • Create the training content and upload it to an online platform.
  • Create content for blogs and social networks that allows you to capture the attention of the audience.
  • Create lead magnets to capture leads from potential students.
  • System of automation to capture leads by the discharge of lead magnet.
  • Create the course sale page.
  • Launch the machinery for capturing leads and transforming them into students. (For this, I highly recommend the content of social networks and blogs with advertising).
  • Once the users become students you start generating income.
  • Lastly, don't forget the importance of attention to the student so that they really learn and feel that it has been worth the investment.

Once you launch your first course, and it works, you can continue expanding your project to a training school or academy. But I only recommend doing that when you see the results of your first course.

What kind of online courses can you create?

There are so many possibilities! Think about what you have studied, but above all, what you know because you have learned it yourself from the experience in your work. This is what students value most today, practical training. They do not seek someone to teach them or tell them theories, what they seek is to learn. So, during the design of your courses, put the client, in this case, the student, in the center as a priority.

What works the most for me, and is how I started, is listening to my community. I shared everything I was learning every day on my blog, and through my followers' own questions I realized that I knew even more things than I was telling. The day I won the Blogs award was when I realized that I not only had a blog but also a huge community and that this was an asset that I could take advantage of. Hence, doing research, I started selling my templates as info products, and… it worked! But when I started with the courses… it was already crazy!

To this day I not only have premium templates and online courses on my website, but I have also formed the Convert More School for marketers and the Consultant Academy for professionals who sell services. As you can see, one of my most important lines of business, apart from services for premium clients, is focused on online training, and it’s not a coincidence, it works!

How to validate the idea of your online course?

There are many ways, but the simplest is which I invite you to start is the following:

  • Think of a problem that you can solve.
  • Create a related lead magnet.
  • Create content for blogs, social networks, podcasts, etc. where you invite the audience to download that lead magnet.
  • I recommend investing in Ads to promote all this content and reach more and more audience.
  • If you get a certain amount of leads (eg 2000), that will mean that there are many people with that problem and interested in solving it by buying your online course.
  • The next step will be to start up the machinery for creating the online course and selling it.

How to create a successful and valuable course for your audience

I already mentioned it in a previous point, but I insist and expand the explanation here: The key is to focus on the problems that your audience has to solve through training and transform them into satisfied students/clients.

What really works is to show our real experience that we must combine with some documentation. But there is no use taking 10 marketing courses and then making a copy and paste a summary of key concepts, what you need is to show your real experience to really contribute something unique and different. Do not forget!

Your audience values your knowledge, experience, achievements... and signs up for your courses because they want to achieve the same thing that you have achieved, no more, no less.

How much does it actually cost to set up an online course?

If you do a course at a professional level you will have to calculate a minimum investment of 300-400 dollars. If you stop using certain tools and prefer to save as much as possible, the course will cost you about 80 - 150 dollars. There is no financial excuse for not doing it! Because in addition, the return will be much greater.

Platforms to create and set up your online course

There are many free platforms and tools (Moodle, e-Learning.net, free version of Mailchimp, PayPal to manage payments...), but since you are going to get an economic return, I always recommend investing in some basic elements that will save you many pain head, and above all, wasted time.

Screenflow, Infusionsoft, Clickfunnels, Stripe, Memberpress, LearnDash, Facebook Ads, Vimeo... are some of my favorite tools to build the structure of my training projects.

How to successfully sell your online course

There are many ways to sell an online course. The easiest thing is to use an external platform that gives you all the support in exchange for them to stay with a margin (and/or user data), but I recommend that to start doing it right from the beginning you try a little and launch it completely independently with your own technology platform. Capturing the leads yourself and transforming them into customers.

Do not think that it is something too complex, with WordPress and a plugin you can perfectly assemble the entire training environment. And then, with a funnel automation platform, prepare the entire funnel part.

But first of all, the most important thing to start an online course is to start to raise ideas about the plan it should have.

In short, if you want to live off your talent and knowledge, the time has come for you to launch your online course, it will not only be a way to obtain passive income but also to continue learning and improving yourself.
